La Banquise

Open 24hrs La Banquise is staple for all poutine lovers in Montreal. Starting out a small ice cream shop La Banquise was opened in 1968 by local fireman Pierre Basalou. After deciding to turn the place into a 24 snack bar the restaurant offered its first poutine in 1980, adding 2 types to the menu. The menu now boasts an impressive 30 different types of poutine and is run by the original owners daughter- Annie. La Banquise offers everything from breakfast poutine to vegan poutine.

Schwartz's Deli

Founded in 1928 by Reuben Schwartz this internationally famous smoked meat delicatessen has become a Montreal favourite. Celebrities, and pro sports players around the globe have recognized Schwartz's for its incredible smoked meat. Following the same recipe for the past 87 years, Schwartz's smoked meat contains no preservatives, and it smoked daily. The key ingredient being that it is marinated for 10 days before being smoked. A staple of Saint-Laurent Street, a line can be seen going down the block!

Fairmount Bagel

Established in 1919, Fairmount Bagel has become a favourite to many Montrealers, as well as a major tourist destination. Originally located on Saint Lawrence Boulevard, founder Isadore Shlafman moved to the current location on Fairmount Street in 1949. Still a family owned business, the recipe followed is the same one that Grandfather Isadore created, with the same attention to detail and quality. The bagels are all rolled by hand and baked in a wood oven.  They currently offer 22 flavours of bagels, and you can get them with all sorts of dressings like cream cheese, salmon and dijon, and ham and cheese.

Burger de Ville

Owned and operated by the father-son duo Mohamed and Reda Wahba Burger de Ville is the spot for burgers in Montreal. With multiple locations there is always one nearby to satisfy the burger cravings. With all types of burgers, one even boasting blue cheese, there is something for everyone.

Wilensky's

Established in 1932, Wilensky's Light Lunch, infamous for their sandwiches, is another favourite located on Fairmount Street. Originally a cigar store and barber shop, Wilensky's sandwiches became more and more popular as the customer's would ask for "something special". That something special turned out to be the famous bologna and salami combinations. Still decorated with all the original decor Wilensky's offers a vintage and quiet spot to stop for lunch.

Cafe Santropol

According to founder Garth Gilker the original plan wasn't to start a restaurant- but to save some buildings up for demolition on Saint-Urbain. In 1976 he started and alternative cafe to appeal to all the local McGill and UQAM students. "Café Santropol became known as a quirky restaurant with a simple menu and comfortable eclectic decor." The back garden has been voted best terrace in Montreal, and is a popular spot for tourists.
